Hello and Welcome to Ositos English!

Greetings! My name is Brian Hunter, and I’m a Canadian online English teacher. In this first post, I want to introduce myself and share a bit about the journey that led me to create my own online teaching business.

A Little Background

I began teaching English many years ago in Argentina, where I taught a wide range of students both privately and through companies. The ages and proficiency levels of my students varied greatly, which allowed me to continuously develop and improve my teaching style and make me a better teacher.

From Argentina, I moved to Mexico City, where I taught employees at a tech company outside the city through an English language school. Afterward, I moved to Miami Beach, where I taught English to students from all over the world at a language school—a valuable and unique experience that helped me hone my skills further.

A few year later I moved to the tropical island of Bocas del Toro, Panama. While there, I took a detour to start a beach grill (I am a bit of a foodie), but returned to teaching by 2017. At that point I began working for Chinese English language companies, teaching English online to children located in that country. After a few years, I was ready to become independent.

Going Solo

By 2021, I was ready to embark on a new challenge. While working with Chinese companies had been vital to my growth as an online teacher, I found the lesson content they provided limiting. The materials were often static, lacking in multimedia and interactive elements, and I spent a lot of energy trying to make classes engaging. I felt that I could do better creating the lessons myself.

So, I decided to “go solo,” pursue my own students, and create my own curriculum. I began designing my own lessons—some from scratch, some with content I adapted from online sources—building courses that are interactive, visually engaging, and tailored to each student’s needs and interests. Since then, I’ve seen how much more effective and enjoyable learning can be when students are given inspiring and dynamic material. My students—and their families—have become wonderfully loyal, and it’s been a real pleasure to watch them expand their knowledge of English while gaining knowledge about the world around them in the process.

Now, with Ositos English, I’m expanding my classes and fully dedicating myself to creating the best online learning experience possible.

My Teaching Philosophy

不闻不若闻之, 闻之不若见之, 见之不若知之, 知之不若行之
“Tell me, and I will forget. Show me, and I may remember. Involve me, and I will understand.”
Confucian saying

Student engagement is at the heart of my teaching philosophy. I accomplish this in my lessons in three ways. First, the lessons are visually appealing, interactive, and often have a whimsical touch to keep students engaged. Second, whenever possible, I tailor content to the students’ interests, which is fairly easily attainable through my growing library of materials which cover a wide range of topics. Finally, I bring as much energy and enthusiasm as I can to each class. Interest in a subject by the teacher can be contagious, just as disinterest can be.

Another important part of my philosophy is to present a big-picture view of English, focusing on language structure and patterns rather than overwhelming students with rules. I cover grammar, of course, but in a straightforward, accessible way that’s easy for students to apply.

I also believe in being demanding in a supportive way. If I feel a student can reach a higher level, I’ll let them know—often with a bit of friendly teasing to motivate them. Building a strong connection with my students is essential, and when they feel that connection, they will want to do their best. Conversely, when they perform well, I make sure to acknowledge it enthusiastically. Recognizing a job well done is critical to encouraging confidence and growth.

What’s Next?

In this blog I plan to share insights from my teaching, funny stories, and practical tips on learning English. As well I will highlight some of the more interesting lessons that I am developing and working on and update progress on this business venture.

Finally, a word on the name “Ositos English.” Ositos means “little bears” in Spanish, and I chose it in memory of my dog, Bear. Bear was part border collie, a great friend, and my constant companion for 13 years. Originally from Argentina, he traveled with me to eight different countries. He passed away in 2013. I still miss him every day.
