How We Learn A Second Language

Over many years of teaching of, one on one private classes, classroom settings and online I certainly have developed a style and my preferences. I try to combine all facets of the language into my lessons; conversation, vocabulary, grammar and structure, comprehension and reading. I also firmly believe an engaged student is a student who is much more likely to learn which I try to make the lessons not only informative but entertaining as well.

But understanding the learning process in a deeper sense and being familiar with the latest research is also important. Additionally, like in most subjects we work with all the time it is easy to develop our personal biases in what works and what doesn’t and we should always strive to recognize and address these biases. Towards this end, I am reading the important 2013 book (update in 2017) by Patsy M Lightbown and Nina Spada called “How Languages are Learned.”
